Biography
Sarah Charlotte was born in May 1831 to Major-General Sir Charles Bruce and his wife Charlotte. In 1860 she married the future prime minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman and the couple, having no children, hosted distinguished guests at parties in their London home at Grosvenor Gardens and at Belmont Castle. Sarah Charlotte was well-versed in politics and culture, and it is believed she had significant influence over her husband and his politics throughout their marriage. She spoke fluent French and had a keen interest in French literature. She suffered from a debilitating illness during the time her husband was Prime Minister and was very rarely able to leave 10 Downing Street. She died in her sleep on 30 August 1906, aged 74.
