Biography
Gertrude Emily Hicks Bustill Mossell (1855-1948), known as Mrs N F Mossell, was the daughter of prominent Black Quakers who became Presbyterians. Mrs Mossell graduated from the Institute for Colored Youth and the Robert Vaux Grammar School. She became a journalist, writer, editor and activist, whose works focused on Black women and racial equality, advocating for women to enter journalism. In 1893, she married Nathan Francis Mossell, founder of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, and the couple had two daughters together. In 1894 her book The Work of the Afro-American Woman was published under the initials of her husband. In 1902, she wrote a children’s Sunday school book Little Dansie’s One Day at Sabbath School.
