Biography
Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh was born in 1776 at Buckingham Palace, the daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte. As a young girl she assumed the role of nurse to her younger sister Amelia and then to her father. At the age of 40, in July 1816, she married her cousin Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. Prince William died in 1834 and Mary became a royal matriarch and confidante to her niece the young Princess Victoria. She died aged 81 in 1857 at Gloucester House.
