Biography
Princess Catherine Hilda Duleep Singh was born 27th October 1871 in Kensington, London. She grew up in Elveden, Suffolk, but after her mother died in 1887 and her father was in Europe gathering support for his bid to reclaim the Punjab, Catherine, her sisters and youngest brother were placed in the care of Arthur Oliphant. It was in his care that she met her new governess Lina Schäfer from Kassel. She would later travel to Germany with Schäfer and, after the First World War, Catherine moved in with Schäfer in Kassel. Following Schäfer’s death in 1937, and the rise of Nazism, Catherine fled the country in 1938 and returned to England, where she spent much of her remaining years housing German-Jewish refugees. Like her sister Sophia, Catherine was an active suffragette and attended various fairs and rallies. Catherine died 8th November 1842.
