Biography
Frances Anne (nee Pratt), 1st Marchioness of Londonderry, was the mistress of a politically connected household in Georgian Ireland. She was born in 1751 to lawyer and Whig politician Charles Pratt and his wife Elizabeth. In 1775, she became the second wife of Presbyterian and land owner Robert Stewart, 1st Marquess of Londonderry. The couple lived at Mount Stewart, County Down, where Frances’s circle of friends included those engaged in the democratic politics of the United Irishmen. She was a friend of Jane Greg, who has been called the head of the United Irish Female Societies, and of John Petty, son of the former British Prime Minister Lord Shelbourne. Lady Frances dies in 1833 in Hastings, preceded by six of her 11 children.
