Biography
She was born on 11 February 1927 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire. She was an only child. Her father did farm work and road work among other jobs. She lived with her parents, her maternal uncle, and both her maternal grandparents until the grandparents passed away. Her maternal grandfather worked on the land as well. He had been in the First World War and had been taken prisoner in France. Her grandparents met when her grandmother was a nurse in London during the war. Her paternal grandparents lived in Horncastle, where her family moved later on. The family used to go on day trips to the seaside at Skegness. She went to the local school in Spilsby where everyone knew everyone. She left school at 14. When she lived in Horncastle, she helped to look after a lady who lived next door to her. She later worked at a pea factory. She met her Italian future husband when he was a prisoner of war working at a local farm and her friends introduced them. They met when she was about 18 and they were married when she was 24. She went to visit his family with him in 1948, before they were married, and would go back to his home in Salerno a handful of times more in her life. She and her husband had two sons. They moved to Bedford so that her husband could join a friend of his working at the brickworks in Ridgemont.
