Biography
The interviewee was born 23 May 1931 in Blackburn, Lancashire. Her family moved south to Bedfordshire for work in the late 1930s. Her father worked at Lidlington yard for Marston Valley brickworks from 1938, then moved into bar stewarding. She attended a primary school in the village. She recalls a boy drowning in a brickfield knot hole. She would use the train service to Stewartby to attend secondary school. She left at fourteen to train as a hairdresser in Bedford. She recalls hundreds of soldiers based locally during the Second World War. She recalls wartime smoke screens to create fog above Ampthill and minimise bomb damage form air raids. She married an Ampthill man and lived at the family newsagent's shop.
