Biography
The interviewee was born on 13 April 1919 and grew up in Millbrook, where she also attended school at The Old School House from the age of five to eleven, she then went to Ampthill School. She would often visit her grandparents in Maulden and Ampthill. When she left school she went to work as a domestic helper and babysitter in Ampthill on Saturdays. She then moved to Stewartby at the age of 16 to work at the brick factory, where she would help in the kitchen, later becoming a cook at 19 at the start of the Second World War. She then went to work as a pastry chef at the Ordnance factory in Elstow, where they would make machine guns and munitions. Her husband worked as an iron moulder at a tank part factory in Bedford and was also a part of the Home Guard in Millbrook. She married in 1939.
