Biography
The interviewee was born in Clifton, Bedfordshire, on 28 January 1931. Her father and mother were from Henlow. She didn't get on well at local infants school, so parents sent her to a small private school in Arlesey. During her childhood, two evacuee girls came to stay with them during the Second World War. Her family moved to Stewartby when Father got a job as a driver with London brick Co. During the war, she contracted scarlet fever and had to have a period in Biggleswade Isolation Hospital. She had attended a Baptist Chapel when in Clifton and a non-denominational church in Stewartby. She met her husband socially, he was Polish, and her parents didn't like the fact that her husband was a Catholic. Her first job was as a junior post in a solicitor's office in Bedford. After two years, she obtained a job in the brickworks office at Stewartby, moving to accounts before leaving to have children. When all 3 children were at school, she returned to part-time work in the offices at London Brick Co. under the same office manager. Took early retirement but then had a part-time job as switchboard operator in the Engineering Block at Stewartby. Now retired, she recalls having an active social life, and is proud of her three children.
