Biography
The interviewee was born in St. Helens, Lancashire on 7 June 1933. Her father came down to work in Bedford as an electrical engineer, whilst she and her mother stayed at home in Liverpool. They would eventually move down south to live in Elstow. She had one younger sister. She attended Dame Alice Girls School where her parents had to pay a fee, before she was exempted because of her high attainments in exams. She taught Latin privately and was later offered a place at the London School of Economics. She recalls her many opportunities that she had whilst in London, such as visiting the House of Commons, law courts, and Wimbledon for the tennis championships. After studying, she got an office job with the Coal Board in London. She married at 23 and moved to Bedfordshire where her husband. She went on to work at the brick works in Stewartby, in the geology section, and worked there for 3 years. Her first baby would pass away, but she went on to have 3 other children. She was a keen lace maker, and learned the craft in a class in Cranfield. She went on to teach lace making at Elstow Craft Centre, Olney and Woburn Sands. She would then go into business, selling her lace patterns world-wide.
