Biography
The interviewee was born on 20 October 1932 in Cranfield, and grew up in Stewartby. Her father was in the ARP and was a bricklayer, building air raid shelters during the Second World War. She would attend the local church and went to Sunday School. For entertainment she would play tennis and swam in the local pool, she also enjoyed participating in sports days at the school. She left school aged 13 and went to work at the London Brick Company at Stewartby in the stationery department. She attended evening classes at Stewartby school where she learnt shorthand and bookkeeping to help with her career at the brickworks. She then moved on to work in the special expenditure department for licences at London Brick. She met her future husband at the Stewartby Operatic Society, where they would sing and perform and she would help make costumes. They married in 1960 and she left work full-time, working only part-time when her two children were growing up.
