Biography
Maggie Pogue Johnson (1883-1956) was a Black American composer and poet. She was born in 1883 in Virginia to Lucie Jane Banister Pogue and Reverend Samuel Pogue and had a well-educated childhood. She was a teacher for two years in Virginia and president of the school Literary and Debating Society. In 1904, Maggie married Doctor Walter W Staunton and they had one child together. From 1910 to 1952, Maggie published four collections of poetry. Her early poetry formed part of a wider movement by Black female poets to create an alternative model of womanhood from that which was dominated by the white, middle-class experience. She wrote verse in both standard English and in Black American dialect and speech patterns.
