Biography
Lady Pleasance Smith was a writer and editor. She was born in 1773 to Robert and Pleasance Reeve. In 1796, she married Sir James Edward Smith, founder of the Linnaean Society, and the couple moved to Norwich. After James’s death in 1828, Pleasance edited his memoirs and published them in 1832 before returning to live in Lowestoft. She remained close to the Linnaean Society, donating books, specimens and some of her husband’s letters, becoming known for her philanthropy and generosity. Lady Smith was a prolific letter writer herself and continued to write almost to her death, despite declining eyesight. She died in 1877, aged 103.
