Biography
Agnes Geraldine (née Fox-Pitt) was a diarist, essayist and aristocrat, and a supporter of women’s suffrage. Born in 1863, she was the daughter of Lieutenant General Augustus Henry Lane Fox-Pitt-Rivers and his wife Alice Margaret. Agnes attended Oxford High School as a child. In 1883, she married Walter John Grove, son of Katherine Grace and Thomas Fraser Grove, and they had five children. On their return from their three-month honeymoon in the USA, Agnes spent her time at their home in Grosvenor Gardens and in Rushmore and began a daily diary which she kept up until her death. In 1892, Agnes joined the women’s suffrage movement; she wrote articles and spoke in support of the movement, including at the International Congress of Women in Paris in 1900. Walter succeeded to the Baronetcy of Ferne House in 1897 and Agnes became Lady Grove of Ferne House. The couple sold Ferne House in 1902 and in the same year, Agnes’s first book was published. Agnes was to publish three more books in her lifetime. She died from tuberculosis in 1926 in Wiltshire.
