Biography
Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins (1859-1930) was an African American novelist, playwright and journalist, and a pioneer in her use of romance novels to explore race. Pauline grew up in Massachusetts in a well-educated household that encouraged Pauline academically. Before focussing on her literary talents, Pauline became well known for her roles as an actress and singer, having joined her mother and stepfather’s touring singing group. In 1900 she published her first novel Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South and from 1900 to 1904 she was the editor for the Colored American Magazine, for which she wrote short stories and bibliographic articles. Pauline went on to write another four novels before her death in 1930 from injuries sustained during an accident.
