Biography
Alice James was born in 1848 into a wealthy and intellectual family. Her four siblings included novelist Henry James and philosopher William James. Between 1873 and 1876, Alice taught history at a Boston-based correspondence school for women, the Society to Encourage Studies at Home. After her father’s death in 1882, she inherited a share of the family income which enabled her to live independently. By this time, she had suffered from at least two severe breakdowns, having sought various treatments that proved unsuccessful. A couple of years later, she travelled to England with her companion Katharine Loring in the hope that a change of scenery might help but continued to suffer from bouts of ‘hysteria’. Alice began her diary in 1889, which was published after her death. She died in 1892 from breast cancer, aged 43.
